Grain-Free Update #3

It’s been officially 6 1/2 weeks since I started eating wheat/gluten/grain-free.   I’ve had a couple of bumps in the road, but I’m learning A LOT about what my system can and can not tolerate and what WAS causing me issues that I had no idea about.

  • Vodka has wheat in it depending on how it’s made.  DAMMIT and DUH! I know there are vodka’s out there (i.e. Tito’s) that are not made with wheat, so I’ll be on the lookout.
  • Wine does NOT have wheat in it.  Here’s an interesting thing I discovered this weekend – I had absolutely NO headache or hang over after consuming white wine 3 days in a row.  This is an interesting discovery.   I’m allergic to red.  Love it, but unless you want to party in the ER with me, I don’t touch it.   Although I joke a ton about it, I’m not a huge drinker.  I just don’t like the way I feel the next day. Alcohol just has not appeared to like me all that much in the past.   I’m beginning to think it was the other stuff in adult beverages.
  • I ate out a ton this weekend and it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.  I felt weird being one of  ”those people” who ask for the gluten-free menu.  But I did it and I’m glad I did.  I’m getting used to asking for it now.
  • I’ve lost 11 lbs to date.  I’m actually stunned by this.  I ate a lot and drank a lot of wine this weekend, so I really thought I would have gained.  But I didn’t.  I stayed on my wheat-free path.  I did have sushi with rice (NO SOY SAUCE – it has wheat in it!) though. Rice was the only grain I had and it didn’t seem to send me into anything like wheat & gluten does.
  • My clothes fit now.  I don’t ooze over the top with my muffin top or have to strain to button them.  I’m even able to tuck shirts again instead of just letting them hang so no one can see my muffin top spillage.
  • I’m still being told by some family & friends how “extreme” this appears to be.  It will be really interesting how chastised I am by the outlaws that come into town this weekend.  Screw ‘em.  I feel better!
  • I’m beginning to interest my Mom in this a little more. She has bad arthritis. She’s started doing it, but doesn’t understand that it’s pretty much an all or none thing.  You can’t cheat 2-3 times a week and think it won’t do anything.   She did say they ordered a pizza Sunday and she was SOOOOOOOOOO tired and didn’t feel like doing anything all day Monday.  Hmmmmm.
  • My dear friend that came to visit this weekend is also VERY interested in this now too. I’m not sure she will do it, but it’s started her thinking about it.
  • The Hubs started listening to my friend and I talk about it.  Maybe it was the part about Moobs that got his attention.
  • My seasonal allergies appear to be better than in seasons past and in comparison to a ton of other people right now.  I did have to start some allergy meds, but it’s nowhere near as bad as they’ve been in the past.  Who knows if it’s related to this.
  • My mood is better. Although there are still things that piss me off, I seem to be getting over it much quicker and not hold on to it. Even my friend that came to town said she noticed a difference in my mood. I’m hoping I can get off my anti-depressant soon.
  • Headaches are few and far between. Use of Ibuprofen has GREATLY reduced for headaches and joint pain.
  • The more I read Wheat Belly, the more I know I’m not going back to eating wheat & gluten.  Get the book. Really interesting read.
